Big Ass Spider! (2013) Directed by Mike Mendez. With Greg Grunberg, Ray Wise, Clare Kramer, Lin Shaye and Patrick Bauchau.
Carnage abounds in Mike Medez’s, Big Ass Spider – alternatively titled, Mega Spider, although I think you catch the general drift. The set-up? Huge, bulletproof arachnid goes down-town L.A for a three course meal of bikini clad babes and badly trained police officers.
Surprisingly, the film features a few faces you might recognise. Greg ‘Heroes’ Grunberg takes the central role as a resourceful exterminator, caught-up in the hunt for the beast, while TV and screen veteran, Ray Wise, is on hand to oversee the mission.
We sign-up for films like this for some guilty fun, and in places, Big Ass Spider delivers the goods. It’s visual effects are a mixed-bag of terribly cheap, and not that terrible, while the script itself, wisely opts for a tone of self-deprecation. However, the film isn’t anywhere near as funny as it thinks it is, as it blunders through one predictable set piece to another. The highlight comes around 40mins in, when the rampaging behemoth scurries through a populated park, chewing and impaling anyone in it’s path.
With visual winks to seminal works including King Kong and Aliens, Big Ass Spider is best seen as a moderately amusing Friday night giggle with friends. It is as clumsy as it is stupid, but you already knew that. 2/5
